November Yellows

Thu Nov 5, 2009, 9:43 PM
The streets are decorated with piles of bright yellow leaves. Quite a dramatic effect, fun to walk in, and the leaves fly up into tiny whirlwinds as cars pass by. What's not to love?!?

Spent a few uninspiring weeks where nothing came out right, but this week the calligraphy blues has started to lift. Hurrah! Just in time to make my Christmas cards!

Artistic intro

Mon Oct 26, 2009, 5:40 PM
As part of self-promotion month, :iconmoonbeam13: has encouraged artists to promote their work in their journals.
So by way of introduction to my gallery, here is my artistic bio.

1. Who are you? I started learning calligraphy from books when I was 14, though after a while I lost some of the passion - lain calligraphy started to feel repetitive. Then I discovered the joys of experimenting with colours, tools and styles a few years ago, I plunged back and haven't stopped scribbling since. More recently, I discovered local workshops to polish some of the raw techniques I accumulated over the years.
2. What is your artistic passion? Calligraphy, working with colours, trying to find some playful way of getting text onto the page.
3. Why did you get into art? Short answer: the joy of creating something to show around.
4. How do you inspire yourself? Mostly through calligraphy books, calligraphy online, other art forms, poems.
5. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully, still doing calligraphy, and exhibiting my work in a gallery.

Don’t know who to send a suggestion to for calligraphy.

Big sigh of relief!

Fri Aug 28, 2009, 8:41 PM
All summer long I was working (among other things) on revamping the website of La Société des calligraphes de Montréal (the Montreal calligraphy society), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this Fall. It was a complete overhaul - graphic design, architecture, software - the works! We finally pushed the site into the websphere tonight, and I must admit I'm pretty proud of the results. We have lots of photos of our exhibitions and activities, and we every month we will re-publish articles from our past newsletters. Our goal was to have interesting information for all calligraphers, not just our local members. And it's completely bilingual (French & English). You are welcome to visit the site: [link]
We still have some tweeking to do (typos have a habit of only being discovered after you go live), but the grunt work is done and over with!
Hurrah!

Almost done!

Tue Aug 4, 2009, 8:16 PM
Big month, July. Lots of last-minute translation for the big World Science Fiction in Montreal, and lots of work for the new webpage I'm helping create for the Montreal calligraphy society. The convention in this weekend - I'm so excited! A lot of people I've worked with over the internet will finally get faces, I get to meet interesting authors, re-connect with friends, and I hope to meet Neil Gaiman (guest of honour) at his signature session.
After that, another 2 weeks to iron out the bugs of the webpage and train to do updates myself, then I can claim my life back! Yay for free time! (translation: more calligraphy!) I'll link to the website when it's public, in September - there will be lots of photos & articles of interest to calligraphers.
